Position Summary
To provide support for the operations of the youth baseball and softball program. The individual in this capacity has specific duties relative to their job, in addition to, the general rules, policies, procedures, and expectations of the Department.
Position Description
Although every detail of the day-to-day job may not be included in this job description, the Youth Baseball Umpire-in-Chief will be expected to perform the duties required to administer a successful program that provides a positive experience for the participants. Keep in mind; enthusiasm and communication are key!

Positions Reporting to this Position: Youth Baseball Umpires
Age Requirement: Minimum of 18 years old
• Have superb knowledge and understanding of all National Federation, Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and Independence Township Parks and Recreation rules.
• Be respectful to the sport and its participants. Treat everyone equally.
• Assist Recreation Specialist where needed.
• Secure proper hire-in forms for each umpire prior to first scheduled date of work and submit to designated employee.
• Supervise all umpire staff for Youth Baseball/Softball.
• Provide each umpire with an Umpire Manual. The manual will act as a written guideline detailing: rules, mechanics, sportsmanship, communicating with coaches and players, uniform, and code of ethics for umpires.
• Conduct all umpire training meetings.
• Evaluate each umpire weekly and document progress.
• Generate and communicate work schedules for all umpires in a timely fashion.
• Copy umpire schedules for site supervisors daily and supply supervisors with any other items needed (replenishing game cards).
• Assist with uniform distribution, equipment/uniform exchange, equipment return and end of season equipment inventory.
• Provide Recreation Specialist with completed game cards daily.
• Provide Recreation Specialist with accurate payroll for all umpires including number of games worked or hours worked.
• Responsible for any umpire training meetings that are required.
• Assist Recreation Specialist with all Supervisor trainings.
• Communicate with Recreation Specialist on a daily basis.
• Check voice mail and email daily.
• Be visible and “active” on site. Develop professional relationship with coaches and managers. Be approachable.
• Complete weekly game standings and send results to Coaches.
• Responsible for enforcing all COVID-19 safety protocols and procedures.
Independence Fest
It is mandatory that the Youth Baseball Umpire In Chief, UIC, works at least an 8 hour shift on the 4th of July for Independence Fest. The job duty on this day will not reflect the duties of the above supervisor position.
