Position Summary
To provide support for the operations of the Adult softball program. The individual in this capacity has specific duties relative to their job, in addition to, the general rules, policies, procedures, and expectations of the Department.

Although every detail of the day-to-day job may not be included in this job description, the Adult Softball Umpire will be expected to perform the duties required to administer a successful program that provides a positive experience for the participants. Keep in mind; enthusiasm and communication is key!

Reports to: Umpire-in-Chief
Positions working with this position: On-site softball director/ Recreation Specialist
Age Requirement: Minimum 18 years old
 
Responsibilities
• Have knowledge and understanding of all Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and Independence Township Parks and Recreation rules.
• Be respectful to the sport and its participants. Treat everyone equally.
• Communicate with Adult Softball Supervisor, where needed.
• Keep abreast of new rule changes.
• Wear proper ASA required umpire attire.
• Arrive to scheduled game a minimum of 15 minutes prior.
• Responsible for enforcing all COVID-19 safety protocols and procedures.
 
Training
• Attend an ASA Umpire Clinic each year.
• Attend Mandatory Umpire Meeting.
• Must be certified through ASA Softball of Metro Detroit
• Document all training.
• Review the emergency response and severe weather procedure.
• Provide a copy of our ASA card prior to working your first game.
• Complete all necessary hire in paperwork prior to first game.
 
Communication
• Communicate with Adult Softball Supervisor when working.
• Be visible and “active” on site.
• Develop professional relationship with coaches and players.
• Be approachable.
• Provide Adult Softball Supervisor with game cards at the end of your game.
• Communicate with ASA assigner for scheduled game times and days.
